I was likewise taught how to keep educating myself, I suppose, though most of that came through a single high school English teacher, whom I remember fondly. That ability to self-educate guided me through my “down time” from formal eduction, and ultimately allowed me to short-cut my Bachelors by two years and move straight into a Masters. My Doctorate was likewise driven largely by my capacity to self-educate, as I was essentially invited by a professor to do it, when he recognized that some work I was doing on my own would fit with their doctoral program.
So we’ve clearly misunderstood one another on some level.
I still contend that education needs a serious overhaul. I just think we have a different sense of which way it should go. Fair enough.
