The only thing I'd add is that people like this are actually willfully ignorant—or ignorant in the verbal sense of "ignoring", not just the adjectival dictionary sense of "un-knowing". Accepting certain knowledge into their mental models of the world would problematize their positions too deeply to be permitted. This kind of ignorance is rampant in the current public discourse.
