Absolutely agree. I do think generative ML is "impressive" though—like any clever trick—so people are kind of conflating an impressive aesthetic surface with "art". It will be interesting to see whether the excitement tapers off soon. I tend to think it will, largely because the "efficiency gains" made possible by Midjourney et al. put them in a very cozy relationship with capital, while simultaneously placing them at odds with most human art. At one extreme, people might view them with suspicion, as "counterfeits", while at the other they'll simply become acclimatized and bored, as these images blend seamlessly with the visual din of run-of-the-mill advertising.
